Political Developments

Like most other Southern African States, the political climate in Namibia has been inextricably influenced by the developments in Zimbabwe. The close links between the ruling Swapo Party of Namibia and Zanu-PF of Zimbabwe necessitated many CSO in Namibia to attempt to avoid the same scenario witnessed in Zimbabwe during elections. The elections were conducted, whether free and fair that is debatable. The ruling party lost a seat but still regained the two thirds majority. The new-comer on Namibian politics the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) gained eight seats and the rest ten seats were split between the opposition. As of the compilation of this report, the opposition has secured a court order over auditing of election materials. The regional and local government elections scheduled for November 2010 will unquestionably be of significance to the development of democracy.
